Cultivating food sovereinty
Te Kai a te rangatira

This kaupapa is about enabling access to good quality food and produce at a cheaper price, meaning better kai into the puku of our whānau.

What is The Good Kai Project?

The Good Kai Project is all about exploring ways to get our whānau access to better food at a better price. We see a better way for the food system to work; a co-operative model which allows people to access good quality kai at better prices than what they’d pay at alternative shops.

What does it cost?

It depends how big your whānau is – but the goal is to get the cost of good quality kai cheaper than what you’d pay in the shops. We’ve built in some flexible ways to pay, so you can make it work for your whānau and circumstances.

Common Questions

We believe there’s a better way for the food system to work, one that works for the people. The COVID period allowed iwi around the country to lay strong foundations by delivering food to whānau.

The impact of the pandemic will be seen for a long time in our communities. We want to provide a long term solution for better kai at a better price for our whānau. Together, we are designing a model that has the power to grow and provide kai for even more people, in a way which provides jobs and gives back to the community.
Everyone who's keen on getting good affordable kai for their whānau. We are starting with delivery into some pilot regions, but over time we want to make The Good Kai Project accessable to everyone in Aotearoa.
The trial is being supported by a collection of three Iwi: Ngāti Kurī, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, and Waikato Tainui. With additional support from The Ministry of Social Development and The Tindall Foundation.
